| Assateague Island National Seashore includes thirty-seven miles of the wildest and most beautiful beaches on the east coast for you to explore and enjoy. Home of the famous Chincoteague ponies and the Assateague Lighthouse, the Island is also a bird watcher's paradise - over 300 species of birds have been spotted here. While the many trails like the Wildlife Loop and Woodland Trail are ideal for biking or hiking, fishing swimming, surfing, and kayaking are popular pastimes in the waters surrounding the islands. And if you enjoy walking empty beaches or collecting sea shells, visit Assateague Island from late fall through spring. |

| On Chincoteague Island, home to some of the East Coast's finest decoy carvers and artists, you'll enjoy unique shops, galleries, and museums - such as the Oyster and Maritime Museum and the Refuge Waterfowl Museum. For your dining pleasure, there are numerous waterside and Island restaurants serving fine seafood, steaks, and Island specialties. Then, there are the festivals and events that have made the Island famous - such as the Seafood Festival in May, the Power Boat Regatta in June, the Firemen's Carnival and pony swim in July, the Decoy Show in September, and the Oyster Festival in October (see the Dining and Events sections below). |
